People Helping People: Making a Difference to Our People

By Noel Ashpole, Partner, BDO Thailand

At BDO, our global philosophy is simple but powerful: People Helping People.
While those three words may sound straightforward, they capture something fundamental about how great organisations succeed. Business is ultimately about people. It is about helping clients navigate challenges, helping colleagues grow in their careers and helping communities prosper. When people invest in one another's success, extraordinary things can happen.

That philosophy was one of the reasons I joined BDO Thailand in 2020.

Throughout my career, one of my greatest passions has been making a difference to people. I have always believed that leadership is not defined solely by results or position, but by the positive impact we have on those around us. The best leaders create opportunities, remove barriers and help others achieve more than they thought possible.
When I joined BDO, I saw an organisation whose values closely aligned with my own. Beyond the firm's reputation for professional excellence, there was a genuine belief that people matter. Success was measured not only by growth and performance, but by the development of individuals and the strength of relationships built along the way.

In Thailand, we have embraced BDO's global philosophy through a commitment that guides our People & Culture agenda: Making a Difference to Our People.
For us, this is more than a statement. It is a commitment that influences how we recruit, develop, support and lead our people every day.

Creating Opportunities to Thrive
Every person joins an organisation with their own ambitions, talents and aspirations. One of our most important responsibilities as leaders is to create an environment where those individuals have the opportunity to realise their potential.
That starts with learning and development.
The world around us is changing rapidly. Technology is transforming industries, client expectations continue to evolve and the skills required for future success are constantly developing. In this environment, continuous learning is not optional; it is essential.
At BDO Thailand, we invest heavily in helping our people build both technical expertise and leadership capability. However, development is about far more than attending training programmes or completing professional qualifications.
Some of the most meaningful growth happens through experience. It comes from taking on new challenges, working with different teams, learning from mentors and receiving constructive feedback that helps us improve. These experiences build confidence, resilience and capability in ways that formal learning alone cannot achieve.
That is why we encourage our leaders to act as coaches and mentors, helping people identify opportunities, navigate challenges and achieve their career goals. When people know they are supported, they are more willing to stretch themselves and discover what they are truly capable of achieving.

Building a Culture of Belonging
Opportunity alone is not enough. People also need to feel that they belong.
One of the things I am most proud of at BDO Thailand is the culture we continue to build together. Our people come from a diverse range of backgrounds and experiences, bringing different perspectives and ideas to the organisation.
Those differences make us stronger.
The best ideas often emerge when people with different viewpoints come together to solve challenges and create new possibilities. Diversity drives innovation, while inclusion ensures every individual feels empowered to contribute.
For us, inclusion is not simply a programme or initiative. It is about creating an environment where everyone feels respected, valued and heard. It is about ensuring people can bring their authentic selves to work and feel confident that their contributions matter.
When people feel a sense of belonging, they are more engaged, more collaborative and more motivated to succeed—not only for themselves but for the teams around them.

Putting Wellbeing First
Over the past several years, conversations about wellbeing have become increasingly important in organisations around the world.
Professional success should not come at the expense of personal wellbeing. Sustainable performance requires balance, resilience and support.
At BDO Thailand, we recognise that our responsibility extends beyond career development. We want our people to thrive both professionally and personally. This means fostering a culture where wellbeing is openly discussed, where support is available when needed and where individuals feel encouraged to maintain healthy and fulfilling lives.
When organisations genuinely care about their people, the benefits extend beyond employee satisfaction. Stronger wellbeing leads to stronger engagement, better performance and a more positive workplace for everyone.

Leadership Through Service
One lesson that has remained constant throughout my career is that leadership is fundamentally about service.
The leaders who have had the greatest impact on me were not necessarily the most senior or the most experienced. They were the people who took time to invest in others, share their knowledge and help those around them grow.
That approach continues to shape how I view leadership today.
At BDO Thailand, we encourage leaders to focus not only on delivering results but on developing people. Technical expertise is important, but empathy, trust and authenticity are equally critical.
When leaders help others succeed, they create a ripple effect throughout the organisation. Teams become stronger, collaboration improves and individuals feel inspired to achieve more than they thought possible.
In many ways, this is the clearest expression of People Helping People.

Looking Ahead
As we look to the future, the business environment will continue to evolve. Technology will reshape how we work, new generations will bring different expectations and organisations will need to adapt to changing economic and social realities.
Yet one principle will remain unchanged: people will always be the heart of every successful organisation.
That is why our commitment to Making a Difference to Our People remains as important today as it was when I joined BDO Thailand in 2020.
We will continue to invest in learning and development. We will continue to foster an inclusive culture where people feel they belong. We will continue to support wellbeing and create opportunities for future leaders to emerge.
For me personally, this commitment is more than a People & Culture strategy. It is one of the reasons I joined BDO and one of the aspects of my role that gives me the greatest sense of purpose.
Making a difference to people does not happen through a single initiative or programme. It happens through thousands of small decisions, conversations and actions every day. It happens when leaders invest in others, when colleagues support one another and when organisations create environments where people can thrive.
That is what Making a Difference to Our People means to us in Thailand. It is our local expression of BDO's global philosophy of People Helping People.
Because when we invest in people, we create lasting impact. And when people help people, everyone succeeds.
